Advent & Christmas Preview

This year our Advent Project will be a Jesse Tree by creating felt ornaments to hang in the Parish Hall. Jesse Trees are a very old Christmas Tradition and first started in medieval times. They are used to help tell the story of the Bible from creation to the Christmas Story. The name comes from Jesse who was the Father of King David “And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.” Isaiah 11:1

The ornaments focus on either God’s thread of redemption through the Old Testament or the lineage of Jesus leading up to His birth.

The Jesse Tree is a pageant consisting of ten short vignettes tied together with the visual prop of a large Jesse Tree. After each vignette one of the symbols is placed on the tree. We invite kids ages 0 through 18 to join us in some realm of this production. The Pageant will end as the cast sings “Sing We Now of Christmas”. Please sign up to be a part of this fun production.

Children will begin in church on special Sundays throughout the school year. The children will follow their leaders to the Sunday School Building after the gospel. The lesson will be based on the lectionary readings. Picture books will be chosen to reinforce the lesson in a way that applies to their lives and makes them wonder about God in the world. There will also be time to play games, do crafts and hang-out in a safe supervised environment.

As always, children are welcome to worship with their parents and will find activities, small toys and books in the SE corner of the sanctuary.

Confirmation curriculum will be offered to our Middle School Youth Group beginning in January. We invite participation and leave the decision for confirmation to the student after he/she has completed the course of study. We will join the entire Diocese for Confirmation at St. Mark’s Cathedral in late Spring. Private confirmation class mentoring will be made available by request for older students. Our next class is tentatively scheduled for 2019. Individual instruction may be an option for some older students.

Safeguarding God’s Children

Attention all nursery, children’s and youth volunteers, vestry and staff!

Bishop Rickel is committed to ensuring the safety of all our children and to that end has instituted the requirement of the in-person training program, Safeguarding God’s Children as well as background checks.

This mandate is for all active clergy, all paid employees, and any persons regularly working with youth such as Sunday school teachers, substitutes, Music leaders and Nursery attendants to attend once every five years. Please find one of the upcoming sessions available throughout the Diocese listed at our Diocesan web site www.ecww.org.
