Clean Greens Outreach at Holy Cross

Our goal in 2012 is to grow and deliver TEN TONS of healthy, local, organic produce valued at $30,000, to local food banks.

We have been working with a non-profit outreach of the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Seattle. It is called the Clean Greens Farm and Market. In the city they seek to supply underserved areas, “food deserts,” with fresh produce and farmers’ markets. Many hands are working in Seattle to distribute the produce. We are also growing for local foodbanks.

Over $5000 worth of nutritious fresh produce sent to foodbanks in 2011.

Children love to see how food is grown and be a part of the harvest. These 2nd grade girl scouts harvested $3150 of acorn squash for foodbanks. 500 pounds of summer cabbage to the Maltby foodbank400 pounds of summer squash to the Maltby Food Banka few bumpy lumpy prizes to feed to the goats. The first Sunday in May we planted four rows of spring onions and asked God’s blessings on the work and harvest of the Clean Greens farm.260 pounds of summer squash to Redmond HopeLink Foodbank.2100 pounds of carrots, beets, and turnps valued at $3150 to the foodbanks in early December.

The Pumpkin Patch at Holy Cross - a winsome fundraiser on the church property.

A parishioner volunteers his mighty John Deere and tiller to prepare the planting beds. 200 pumpkins went in on June 12. Planted by volunteers after church. Pumpkins as of August 10. You can tell where the sweet spots are in the compost by the vigor of the vines. On the first Sunday of October the pumpkin patch sold out and raised $600 in 30 minutes for the ministry. It’s going to be a happy Halloween for baby Ivy. Fall, pumpkin patch tilled under and seeded with winter rye cover crop. Now we dream of next year’s pumpkin patch.

Rewarding ways you can be involved.

An October outing to harvest potatoes at the Clean Greens Farm in Duval provided fun in the mud and helped bring in the last potatoes before the fall floods. Our tractor is a 1953 Allis-Chalmers WD45. Primitive by today’s technology, but more than enough for the work at Clean Greens. It pulls a cultivator, disc, middle buster, and mechanical transplanter.. Parishioners don’t have to go all the way to the farm to support the cause. The Pumpkin Patch at Holy Cross is a learning garden right on the church property. Second grade girl scouts gleaning tender summer squash for the Hopelink Foodbank.
